Nelly Furtado 的成名就像是一场美梦：祖籍葡萄牙，出生成长于加拿大，父母都来自勤奋的劳工阶级，母亲的工作是女佣。小时候，Nelly曾一连8个暑假到旅馆当女服务员。虽然在学校里她是个不安份的坏女孩，但其展露出的音乐才华的确令人不可小视，吉他、长号以及尤克里里（一种来自葡萄牙的小吉他）样样精通。

提起加拿大的女歌手, 十个有十个都会说Celine Dion吧; 今次为大家介绍一位来自加拿大英属哥伦比亚的葡萄牙藉女歌手Nelly Furtado。很多人喜欢王菲、许美静的广东歌, 相信都是因为她俩的口音唱起广东歌时很有feel。同样的情况, Nelly Furtado的英文发音, 有着浓浓的葡国口音, 这特色使她唱起歌来, 多了一份异国情调, 也是笔者喜欢Nelly Furtado的原因。她的声线有点似Erykah Badu和Gwen Stefani, 而音乐风格则像Sade唱着Alanis Morissette的作品。
首张debut album内的歌曲充满Hip-Hop、R & B、folk和bossa nova的元素, 亦有点点拉丁风格, 但却并非Jennifer Lopez、Ricky Martin那种over-produced的latin-pop。Debut Single《I’m Like A Bird》、《Turn Off The Night》试听 、《My Love Grows Deeper Part 1》都是R & B的歌曲, 以葡国口音唱出的R & B, 与传统TLC、Destiny’s Child的美式R & B有何分别, 大家真的要亲自听听。“Party”采用Samba曲式, 拉丁节奏加上jazz guitar, 很有电影《乐满夏湾拿》的感觉, 绝对表现Nelly Furtado充满原始魅力的唱腔。 2001年加拿大的朱诺音乐奖(Junos)上Nelly Furtado(妮莉费塔朵)是本届朱诺音乐奖的最大赢家，凭一曲I'm Like a Bird即抱回三项个人奖座，包括最佳单曲、最佳新进艺人和最佳词曲创作，并与专辑制作人共同获得最佳制作人奖。

Nelly Furtado是在今年的9月20日于加拿大的多伦多生下了她的第一个小宝宝Nevis，所以这一张全新专辑《Folklore》的录音工作，几乎大半部份都是在她怀孕的时期间所录制完成的，她开心的表示“这也是为什么这张专辑感觉起来会如此甜蜜，我非常的引以为傲！”还记得上一次巡回演唱时，她还逼着团员们穿著上面印着“Nelly Furtado”字样的T恤，这一次她决定要彻底改变路线，她说并不是因为自己已经升格当妈妈的关系，而是在发行上一张专辑时，她非常喜欢一些夸张而明亮的色彩，那时候的感觉也真的很棒，但是如今她可能已经有点厌烦那些夸张的颜色，所以这次新的造型，Nelly Furtado表示她可能会尝试一些黑色的性感亮片装喔
